Ricardo receives Excelence in the Arts Award
The Board of Directors of the Associates for Breast & Prostate Cancer Studies (ABCs) will honor Ricardo Antonio Chavira with their Excellence in the Arts Award the annual “Mother’s Day” Luncheon. This special afternoon will be held on May 4th at the Four Seasons Hotel. About 500 guests will attend.
The Excellence in the Arts Award recognizes a member of the entertainment industry whose personal and professional accomplishments make a difference, and whose far-reaching volunteerism has made our world a better, safer and healthier home. Previous ABCs honorees include Annette Bening, Louis Gossett, Jr., Shirley MacLaine, James Caan, Kathy Bates, Sharon Osbourne and Burt Reynolds.
To Quote Gloria Gebbia (ABC's President) in a letter to Mr. Chavira:
"We thank you for sharing your mother and sisters courageous battles so openly, and we applaud your commitment as a spokesperson for the Cancer Support Community’s C.A.R.E. Campaign for breast cancer caregivers. Indeed it would be our privilege to present you with the ABCs Excellence in the Arts Award. In my eleven years as president of the Associates for Breast & Prostate Cancer Studies (ABC’s), we have raised nearly $14 million dollars for cancer research at the John Wayne Cancer Institute that was first based at UCLA Medical Center and is now based at Saint John’s Health Center. Recent advances have shown a strong possibility that breast cancer could be controlled, if not cured, in the very early part of this century and under the leadership of Dr. Armando Giuliano, we are determined as a group to be part of these extraordinary breakthroughs."

My mom has breast cancer
Hello Ricardo,
My name is Carol. I'm a huge fan and have watched Desperate Housewives since season 1. I'm an actress and have met you in person once before at the Screen Actors Guild headquarters in Hollywood. I both admire your work and also your involvement in helping to find a cure for cancer. My mom was diagnosed with stage III Breast Cancer. She found out about the cancer back in April of this year. She had a mastectomy in June and also had lymph-nodes taken out from her under arm (one had the cancer in it). She just finished her chemo and is taking a month break before starting her radiation treatments in October. It's been a hard year for all of us. She had complications from surgery and we almost lost her. Her expander causes her much pain and we are looking for another plastic surgeon for her (the plastic surgeon she has right now does not listen to her patients and is quite rude at times and has audibly yelled out that "these patients are driving me crazy") wow...my mom shouldn't be treated that way when she tells her doctor that her expander is digging into her rib and causing great pain. Any referrals? After the radiation treatments are done, my mom is supposed to wait for 6 months and have the expander taken out and have breast reconstruction (with the fat from the abdomen). She has bills that are piling and my parents might lose their house. :( I need to find a great referral for her (plastic surgeon / general surgeon) and she needs help paying for her medical bills relating to her breast cancer. Any suggestions? I would also love to get involved with helping out / volunteering with the fight against breast cancer. I don't want it to take my mom.
